Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is an uncommon pain syndrome with severe pain in the areas supplied by cranial nerves IX. The patients present symptoms such as paroxysmal, electrical shock like pain located in ipsilateral ear, larynx, pharynx, or base of the tongue. Pulsed radiofrequency is a non-destructive procedure and effective in neuropathic pain. It is thought to be a suitable method for treatment of glossopharyngeal neuralgia. A 29 year old woman suffering from left neck and tongue pain triggered by swallowing did not show symptom relief under medication. Pulsed radiofrequency treatment at glossopharyngeal nerve was proceeded. The pain was significantly decreased. Patients with glossopharyngeal neuralgia suffer from severe and constant pain. Pulsed radiofrequency treatment could be effective to these patients with the pain that is not controlled by medication. Therefore, pulsed radiofrequency may be considered as one of valid treatments.
